Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

Spotlight on MinistrySpotlight on Ministry: Adult Christian Education

Each month during 2006, we shined the spotlight on one of the vital ministries and missions of First Presbyterian Church. We hope this helps you get a clearer picture of what the church does and - if you are ready to volunteer - how you can help.

What We Do and Why:

FPC's Adult Christian Education Ministry provides opportunities for members to develop and deepen their relationship with and become followers of Jesus Christ.  Our goal is to facilitate all of us to be doers, not just hearers of God’s Word.
We oversee adult Sunday School, small groups, retreats, Bible studies, Jolly Over 50s, and special educational programs with pertinent topics designed to meet the developing needs and interest of adults in the church.  We also provide the book table that is set up in the back of the Sanctuary.  If you have suggestions for books that you would like to see us feature, please contact Judy Arntz.

Who is Involved:

It takes a lot of volunteers to make a ministry like Adult Christian Education successful.  Here are some of the people who have been involved and given their time so generously.
Judy Arntz is the Elder for the Adult Christian Education Commission.  Members of the commission are:  Gloria Franklin, Kathy Govan, Bill Linstrom, Mike McSween, Tim Scheele, Sue Williams and Pastor Dave Weidlich.  Phoebe Antonio was also on the commission for most of the year.

Our small group hosts are Sharon Spaulding & Joanne O’Meara, Elizabeth Arntz & Dona White, Suzy Zeigler & Lonna Mulkey, Dave Weidlich, Don Brown & Elsie Jonsson, Don Gardner, Tracy Sheppard, and Ted & Judy Arntz.  Our Sunday adult classes are led by Larry Hebert and Bill Linstrom.

Vivian Swain has been the coordinator of Jolly Over 50s (she, along with her late husband Ray, has been leading this for over 10 years and has decided to take a break).
Our women’s retreat leaders are Judy White and Dona White, and the committee includes Phoebe Antonio, Victoria Ellecamp, and Peggy Patrick.

Thank you to all who give so much of your time in service to God and our church.

Volunteers Needed:

We are looking for small group hosts and small group members.  If you would like to get more information about small groups, please do not hesitate to speak to any members of the Commission or any of our current small group hosts.  You do not need to be a Bible scholar to host or participate in a small group.  You just need a place to meet, some material to study (and the Bible provides great study material) and possibly some coffee and snacks.

We are also looking for a new coordinator for Jolly Over 50s.  If you feel called to facilitate this ministry to provide a fun, informative get-together once a month for seniors, please let Judy Arntz know.  I’m sure Vivian would be happy to pass along tips she has learned over the 10 years she has handled this.

We welcome new members who would like to help us plan meaningful and relevant adult programs for our members to join our commission.   We usually meet on the 3rd Monday of the month at 5:45 in the Fireside Room.
